Voyage Data Recorders (VDR) are devices that gather, process and record sensor data from ships to provide valuable insight following an here are the findings incident. They are basically maritime black boxes that help determine the root of maritime accidents and help in their prevention.

VDRs and S-VDRs are fitted to all vessels with at least 3,000 gross tons and up that were built on or after 1 July 2002. A VDR/S-VDR is a fixed electronic storage medium that is tamper-proof sealed in a capsule, capable of enduring the shock and pressures associated with marine incidents such as collision, fire or sinking.

The system is designed for collecting data from a variety of sensors aboard a vessel before digitizing and compressing it prior to storing it in the form of a secure storage unit, which is mounted externally. The tamperproof container is designed to withstand the severe heat, shock, impact and pressures that may be experienced in a maritime incident like a collision, or fire.

Members might consider upgrading their VDR/S-VDR systems to provide them with the ability to store data over longer durations. The IMO performance standard only requires the VDR/S/VDR to store data for up to 12 hours after an incident, before it is erased.

A growing number of manufacturers provide a MantaDigital S-VDR, which can be interrogated from a distance like the way airlines’ FDR data are analyzed following an incident. This allows onboard technical issues to be diagnosed remotely, and assists in the execution of proactive maintenance procedures. Regular shoreside playbacks help bridge teams in understanding the patterns of their performance and identifying improvement opportunities.
